A significant tsunami alert has been issued across Indonesia following a massive earthquake measuring 7.8 in magnitude that struck the region early on Thursday morning.
Major Seismic Event Triggers Immediate Warning
The powerful tremor occurred shortly before 7am local time, specifically at 6.48am, in the Molucca Sea area according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The initial magnitude reading of 7.8 was subsequently revised downward to 7.4, though the event remains classified as a major seismic incident.
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Issues Critical Alert
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center promptly issued an alert warning of potential "hazardous tsunami waves" that could affect coastal regions within approximately 1,000 kilometres of the earthquake's epicentre. This warning specifically applies to vulnerable coastal areas of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
The epicentre was located approximately 120 kilometres from the Indonesian city of Ternate, situated in North Maluku province. Ternate has an estimated population exceeding 205,000 residents, raising significant concerns about potential impacts on populated areas.
Local Authorities Urge Immediate Precautionary Measures
Indonesian authorities have urgently advised residents in affected coastal zones to take immediate cover and move to higher ground if possible. The alert emphasises that dangerous tsunami waves could develop rapidly following such a substantial undersea earthquake.
Seismic monitoring stations across the Pacific region continue to closely track the situation, with particular attention to wave propagation patterns and potential coastal impacts. The downgrade in magnitude from 7.8 to 7.4 may influence the ultimate tsunami threat level, but precautionary warnings remain firmly in place.
This seismic event represents one of the most significant earthquakes to strike the seismically active Indonesian archipelago in recent months. The region is notoriously prone to both seismic activity and resulting tsunami threats due to its position along the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire.
Emergency response teams across Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia have been placed on high alert as they monitor developing conditions. Further updates regarding wave observations and potential coastal impacts are expected throughout the day as more data becomes available from monitoring stations across the affected region.
