The Met Office has forecast a dramatic temperature plunge across the UK, with overnight lows potentially hitting -5C in northern areas and -1C in the south. This comes just days after the country experienced highs of 26C, marking a stark contrast in weather patterns.
Temperature Drop Details
According to the national weather agency, Tuesday night could see the mercury fall to -5C in northern regions, while southern areas may experience lows of -1C. Wednesday night is expected to bring widespread lows of -3C across the country. Daytime temperatures on Tuesday are predicted to peak at 18C before dropping to 15C on Wednesday, a significant decrease from the recent heatwave.
Anomaly Maps Show Widespread Cold
Temperature anomaly maps for Tuesday reveal extensive blue areas across Scotland, Northern Ireland, North Wales, northern England, and eastern regions, indicating temperatures far below the seasonal average. The GFS weather model suggests that on Wednesday morning, the highest temperature anywhere in the UK could be just 8C, representing a sharp drop from the previous week.
Met Office and BBC Forecasts
The Met Office forecast for Tuesday to Thursday describes conditions as "turning cooler for all as northerly winds set in across the UK," with some showers expected, though lighter and fewer than over the weekend. The BBC forecast adds that Tuesday will be largely dry with variable cloud, but showers are possible in the south-west and parts of the north. Wednesday is expected to be generally cloudy with scattered showers in the far north and west, while Thursday may bring further showers to northern and western areas, with the east remaining mostly dry and windy.
Return to Average Temperatures
Fortunately, the Met Office anticipates a return to near-average temperatures later in the month. Its forecast for May 7 to May 16 indicates a "changeable theme" with some rain or showers at times, but also drier, brighter weather. The emphasis on wetter conditions may initially be towards the south and east, with low pressure likely shifting north later in the period. After a cold start, especially in the north, temperatures are expected to recover to around average.
