Met Office Issues Fresh Yellow Ice Warning for Scotland and North-East England
The Met Office has issued a new yellow warning for ice across parts of the United Kingdom, specifically targeting eastern Scotland and north-east England. This alert is in effect from 8pm on Sunday until 10am on Monday, following the expiration of a series of snow and ice warnings over the weekend.
Flood Risks Remain High Across England
Concurrently, the Environment Agency has urged the public to maintain vigilance due to ongoing flood risks. As of Sunday evening, there were 72 flood warnings, indicating that flooding is expected, and 191 flood alerts, signalling possible flooding, across England.
Jonathan Day, the flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, reported that while more than 24,000 homes and businesses have been protected from flooding, approximately 330 properties have been affected by floodwaters.
Hazardous Travel Conditions Expected
Within the ice warning area, the Met Office cautioned that ice forming on untreated surfaces could lead to difficult travelling conditions. The warning stated: “Following a spell of rain and some hill snow during Sunday afternoon, temperatures will fall below freezing as skies clear from the west through the evening and overnight, leading to ice forming on untreated surfaces.”
Unsettled Weather Forecast for the Coming Week
Looking ahead, the forecast for next week predicts unsettled and blustery conditions with showers across the entire country. These conditions are expected to ease into Tuesday. However, another weather system is anticipated to arrive on Wednesday, bringing further unsettled weather. Thursday is projected to be drier, offering a brief respite from the turbulent conditions.
