California Desert Community Equals Historic US March Temperature Record
A small desert community in Southern California has matched the highest March temperature ever documented in the United States. On Wednesday, North Shore, California, soared to 108 degrees Fahrenheit, tying a national record that has stood for decades.
Record-Breaking Winter Heatwave Sweeps Southwest
This extraordinary temperature milestone occurred during an unprecedented winter heatwave across the Southwest, which forecasters predict will persist through the weekend and potentially produce even higher readings. The record, initially set by Rio Grande City, Texas in 1954, is now jointly held by North Shore, California. Meteorologists warn this shared record could be surpassed in multiple cities and towns before the week concludes.
The aptly named Thermal, California, is projected to reach a scorching 110 degrees on Friday, which would establish a new benchmark for March temperatures in the United States.
Early Season Heat Shatters Multiple Records
Phoenix, Arizona experienced its earliest triple-digit temperature on record when the state capital hit 101 degrees Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The previous record was established nearly forty years ago on March 26, 1988, marking only the second occasion Phoenix has recorded hundred-degree temperatures during March.
Bryan Lewis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, characterized this event as one of the most significant March heatwaves in recorded history. "We've broken so many records yesterday and even today we've broken quite a few so far," Lewis stated.
Multiple Cities Experience Historic March Heat
Several metropolitan areas witnessed their hottest March days in approximately four decades on Wednesday:
- Las Vegas reached 99 degrees, substantially exceeding its previous March record of 93 degrees set in 2022.
- Downtown Los Angeles climbed to 94 degrees, surpassing its prior daily high of 87 degrees from 1997.
- Palm Springs, California, the renowned desert destination, registered 104 degrees, equaling its hottest March day on record from 1966.
Extended Period of Abnormal Temperatures Forecast
The Southwest will continue experiencing temperatures twenty to thirty degrees above normal March averages throughout the remainder of the week before a slight cooling trend arrives over the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, numerous other cities across the region are anticipated to record their earliest 100-plus degree days in history during this prolonged heat event.
