8 UK Counties to Hit 35°C with Heat Alerts in Place

The Met Office has identified eight counties in the UK that are expected to experience temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, as a record-breaking May heatwave continues to grip the nation. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat health alerts for five regions in England, warning of increased pressure on health services and a potential rise in deaths, particularly among vulnerable groups.

Counties Set for 35°C

According to the Met Office, the areas forecast to reach 35°C on Tuesday include London, Cambridgeshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, and Surrey. These regions are expected to see temperatures soar rapidly through the morning, with highs hitting 35°C in London, the Home Counties, and Cambridgeshire. More broadly, temperatures exceeding 30°C are anticipated across eastern Wales, as well as eastern, southern, and central England, away from immediate coastal areas.

Record-Breaking Heatwave

The UK experienced its hottest ever May day on Monday, with temperatures reaching 33.5°C at Heathrow before the record was broken again with 34.8°C in London's Kew Gardens. The Met Office stated that Tuesday will be another very hot day, with a rapid rise in temperatures through the morning.

Amber Heat-Health Alerts

The UKHSA has issued amber heat-health alerts for five regions: the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, and the South East. These alerts indicate that the high temperatures could lead to a rise in deaths, especially among people aged 65 and over or those with underlying health conditions. Dr Anya Gopfert, Consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA, emphasised the importance of taking simple precautions and checking on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours.

Forecast for the Week

The Met Office predicts that the heat will persist throughout the week, with highs of 31°C forecast for Wednesday, 30°C on Thursday, 27°C on Friday, and 28°C on Saturday. The British Red Cross has also offered guidance to help people stay safe during the warm weather, advising the use of sunscreen, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking breaks from the sun.
