34C Scorcher Hits Six UK Counties with Yellow Heat Alerts

The UK is bracing for a scorcher, with six counties in the south set to see temperatures soar above 30C on Friday, June 19. According to forecasting site Netweather, the sweltering conditions are expected to arrive on Friday, June 19.

Hottest Areas

Kent looks set to be the hottest spot, with highs of 34C, while London is hot on its heels at 32C. A number of other southern counties will also be basking in sunshine, with thermometers pushing past the 30C mark. Beyond the south, the East and West Midlands will also enjoy warm conditions, with parts of the north reaching the mid-20s. Scotland, however, will remain far cooler than most of England, with temperatures staying firmly in the teens on Friday.

Met Office Warning

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey cautioned that despite the soaring highs, the humidity is likely to bring with it overcast skies for many. "By Friday there is potential for 30C across parts of south-eastern England," Mr Vautrey said. He added that "people will certainly be noticing how muggy it starts to feel during the second half of this weekend, and some quite uncomfortable nights for sleeping well, with overnight temperatures in the high teens across south-eastern areas of England."

In its forecast covering Wednesday to Friday, the Met Office said: "The weather remains mixed during the middle and second half of the week. There will be further rain, especially in the north and west. Some hot sunshine developing further southeast." The Met Office has stopped short of predicting another heatwave, as the anticipated temperatures will not persist across three consecutive days.

Yellow Heat Health Alerts

As a result of the sweltering forecast, several areas across England have been placed under yellow heat health alerts for Friday, June 19. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed the alerts affect the East Midlands, the east of England, London and the South East. A spokesperson said: "Relatively warm and humid nights are also on the cards - not as expected as what we had a few weeks ago, because it won't be wall-to-wall sunshine like that, we had a stronger signal for that compared to this, but nevertheless it is going to be turning warmer."
