Two Men Die Rescuing Children from Sea at Seaton Carew

Two men have tragically died after entering the sea to rescue two children who got into difficulty at Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool. Emergency services were called at approximately 3:45pm on Sunday, July 12, after reports of children struggling in the water.

Rescue Attempt and Fatal Outcome

The two men entered the water to assist the children, who were subsequently taken to hospital for checks and are now confirmed safe. RNLI crews brought the men out of the water, and they received immediate medical treatment, according to Cleveland Police. Despite these efforts, both men were pronounced dead shortly after being brought ashore.

Police Statement and Investigation

Superintendent Glen Ward of Cleveland Police expressed deep sympathy for the families, stating: “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of both the men involved in this tragic incident today. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, sadly both men were pronounced dead a short time after being brought out of the sea.” He added that enquiries are ongoing, but the deaths are not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Warning About Open Water Safety

Ward issued a stark warning: “I would like to remind everyone that open water comes with serious risks. We know it is inviting in the hot weather, but we would encourage people to refrain from entering any open water at all. Today we have sadly seen the true tragedy that can happen as a result. Please take extra care and enjoy the warm weather as safely as possible.”

Specialist trained officers are now supporting the families of the deceased. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of open water, even in warm weather.
