Fire crews were called to a blaze at a recycling centre in Sharston on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The fire broke out at the Longley Lane Recycling Centre just before 12.20pm, prompting a response from three fire engines.
Firefighters Respond to Waste Shredder Fire
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed that the fire involved a waste shredder. Crews from Wythenshawe, Withington, and Cheadle fire stations were dispatched to the scene. A GMFRS spokesperson said: “Shortly before 12.20pm this afternoon (Saturday, July 18), three fire engines from Wythenshawe, Withington, Cheadle fire stations were called to fire inside a commercial building on Longley Lane, Sharston.”
Tip Closed Amid Blaze
The recycling centre reportedly closed as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. The spokesperson added: “Crews arrived quickly and worked to extinguish the fire involving a waste shredder. Firefighters remain in attendance at this time.” No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
