Artemis II Astronauts Enjoyed Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary Before Lunar Journey

The crew of NASA's Artemis II mission managed to squeeze in a cinematic treat before embarking on their groundbreaking voyage to the Moon. Astronauts Jeremy Hansen, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch watched Ryan Gosling's science fiction film Project Hail Mary while in pre-flight quarantine, finding both entertainment and inspiration in the space-themed story.

A Pre-Mission Cinematic Experience

"We were all really lucky. We got to watch Project Hail Mary when we were in quarantine," Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen disclosed in an interview with SpaceQ. "That was a real treat that they sent us a link to view that at home with our families, getting us ready to go on our own space adventure."

The film, which stars Gosling as a science teacher turned interstellar saviour, provided a fitting backdrop for the astronauts' own historic undertaking. Hansen praised the movie's thematic resonance, noting, "I would just say to Ryan that art imitates science and vice versa, it seems. He did a great job in that movie. It's wonderful to see people really leaning into those roles."

Inspiration from Fiction to Reality

Hansen elaborated on the film's impact, describing it as "such an inspirational example" of someone undertaking extraordinary measures to save humanity. "We all thought that movie was really uplifting and inspiring," he added, highlighting how fictional narratives can motivate real-world exploration.

Shortly before launch, the crew received a personalised video message from Gosling himself, wishing them luck on their unprecedented journey. "The Artemis II astronauts are going to space for real, and they will travel farther from the earth than any humans in history," the actor said in his message. "Sending all our best wishes to the Artemis II crew."

Historic Mission Achievements

The Artemis II mission has already secured its place in history, marking the first human flight around the Moon in over fifty years. During their expedition, the crew travelled approximately 252,760 miles from Earth, setting a new record for the farthest distance any humans have ever journeyed from our planet.

This milestone was achieved during a seven-hour lunar flyby that included a forty-minute communication blackout as they passed behind the Moon's far side. The astronauts are currently en route back to Earth, with a scheduled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean concluding their four-day return journey.

Project Hail Mary's Record-Breaking Success

The film that captivated the astronauts has itself been breaking records since its release on March 20th. Adapted from Andy Weir's bestselling 2021 novel and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Project Hail Mary has surpassed the latest Avatar installment to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year.

Produced by Amazon MGM with a budget of $200 million, the science fiction epic has already grossed over $300 million worldwide. The Independent's film critic Clarisse Loughrey awarded the movie four stars, describing it as "immensely likeable and technically impressive, even if it has the whiff of top-shelf nostalgia."

Project Hail Mary continues its theatrical run, now forever linked to one of humanity's most significant space exploration achievements through the shared experience of the Artemis II astronauts.
