One person has been killed and another seriously injured in a shooting at a World Cup fan zone in San Jose, California, police have said.
The incident occurred at San Pedro Square on Sunday night at around 9.10pm local time. There were no World Cup matches being screened at the time, with the day's only game having finished at about 2pm.
San Jose police confirmed that one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The shooting is being investigated as a homicide, and several surrounding streets have been closed.
A Reuters journalist at the scene reported a heavy police presence, with multiple vehicles and a person on a stretcher partially covered by a white sheet being rushed away. The area was cordoned off, and most bars were closed after the incident.
A security guard, who did not wish to be named, said she saw the injured person in distress. “The person was still moaning and groaning,” she said. “There was blood around his neck and upper back.” Police were speaking to security and witnesses.
