PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers are on the final countdown for the first batch of free PS5 games of 2026, set to arrive in a matter of hours. The January line-up, however, has been met with a lukewarm reception from the gaming community, marking a step down from December's more generous offering.
A Subdued Start to the Gaming Year
The new selection returns to the standard three titles after December's bonus five-game drop, and the consensus is that the quality is somewhat mediocre. For members hoping for a blockbuster beginning to the year, this month's Essentials are a disappointment. Nevertheless, they represent three new additions to your library that you may not have considered purchasing.
The January 2026 PlayStation Plus Essentials will become available on Monday, January 6. Based on the timer for outgoing games on the PlayStation Store, the new titles are scheduled to go live at 9am GMT UK time.
The January 2026 PlayStation Plus Games Line-Up
Topping the bill, and confirming an earlier leak, is Need for Speed Unbound. This 2022 street racing title is known for its vibrant, neon-drenched visual style that complements its urban backdrop. While not the most thrilling addition for some, it holds a respectable 77% score on review aggregator Metacritic.
Many argue that Epic Mickey Rebrushed is the standout of the trio. This is a full remake of the 2010 3D platformer, enhancing the original with new areas to discover, fresh abilities for Mickey Mouse, and significant visual and gameplay improvements. Players will journey through the Wasteland, using paint and thinner to dynamically alter the world and shape their adventure.
Rounding out the monthly selection is Core Keeper, a multiplayer mining adventure that has garnered a 'Very Positive' rating on Steam. Its gameplay loop, often favourably compared to the popular sandbox game Terraria, focuses on exploration, crafting, and survival in an underground world.
Last Chance for December's PlayStation Plus Games
This update also serves as a final warning for subscribers to claim the five free PS Plus Essential games from December 2025 before they rotate out of the catalogue. That line-up includes the family-friendly LEGO Horizon Adventures, the cooperative horror of The Outlast Trials, the fast-paced action of Neon White, the shooter Killing Floor 3, and the mech game Synduality Echo of Ada.
Once the new January games go live at 9am GMT on January 6, these December titles will no longer be available to add to your library for free.
