Two-time French Open champion Maria Sharapova made a surprise appearance at Roland Garros this week, and the tennis icon looked markedly different from her playing days. The former world No. 1, known for her elegant blonde locks, has since switched to a brunette style, presenting a transformed image to fans.
Sharapova's Return to Roland Garros
The 39-year-old Russian star was spotted courtside on Tuesday to watch Alexander Zverev's quarter-final victory over Rafael Jodar. Accompanied by fashion entrepreneur Kristina Romanova, Sharapova watched as the German cruised into the semi-finals with a straight-sets win. Zverev will now face Jakub Mensik in the last four.
Sharapova's appearance brought back memories of her glorious era on clay. She won her first French Open title in 2012, defeating Sara Errani in the final, and successfully defended it in 2014 by beating Simona Halep. Those triumphs were part of her five Grand Slam titles, which also included Wimbledon (2004), the US Open (2006), and the Australian Open (2008).
A Changed Look
Throughout her career, Sharapova was celebrated for her striking blonde appearance, but the retired star now sports a darker hair colour. She looked elegant in a plunging navy blazer with red and white striped trim, exuding champion aura despite stepping away from competitive tennis.
Roland Garros holds special significance for Sharapova. It was the only Grand Slam where she won multiple titles, and she also reached the quarter-finals in her first appearance there in 2004 at just 17. She made five more trips to the last eight or semi-finals before finally claiming the title in her first final appearance eight years later.
Life After Tennis
These days, Sharapova keeps busy as a brand ambassador. She was recently seen promoting Stella Artois alongside football icon David Beckham. She also hosts the Pretty Tough podcast, which launched in April and has already featured several high-profile guests.
Despite retiring from professional tennis in 2020, Sharapova remains a hugely respected figure and is frequently seen at major tennis events. Her appearance at Roland Garros delighted fans who remember her as the queen of clay.
