After a prolonged silence, Ubisoft's much-anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has finally shown a flicker of life, sparking fresh hope among fans for an imminent release.
A Silent Domain Hints at Imminent Action
The first concrete sign of movement came not from an official announcement, but from a subtle update to a Prince of Persia domain name on December 10. Spotted by an eagle-eyed fan on the game's subreddit, this separate domain from Ubisoft's current live site suggests background preparations are underway for a future publication or launch.
This digital breadcrumb follows over 18 months of public silence from the publisher on the project. The last official communication was in June 2024 during Ubisoft Forward, where a new CG teaser trailer was shown and a 2026 release window was confirmed. A blog post at the time stated development had entered "full production" at Ubisoft Montreal, with support from studios worldwide, aiming to modernise combat and storytelling while staying true to the 2003 classic.
Rumours Point to a Swift January Shadow Drop
The timing of the domain update lends credence to recent industry rumours. Notably, Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson has predicted Ubisoft could be preparing a shadow drop for the remake, potentially as soon as January 2026. This strategy, where a game is announced and released almost simultaneously, has grown in popularity.
It is believed Ubisoft may have been encouraged by the successful swift launches of other high-profile titles like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster and Hollow Knight: Silksong. Crucially, the Prince of Persia remake is expected to launch before the rumoured Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake, which is also speculated for a late March 2026 release.
The absence of a gameplay trailer at The Game Awards 2025 further fuels speculation of a surprise January release, as fans had expected a reveal there.
A Rocky Road to Redemption
The journey for this remake has been fraught with delays since its initial announcement in 2020. The project faced significant development hurdles, leading to its reassignment from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal. To date, no concrete gameplay footage has been publicly shown, maintaining an air of mystery around the final product.
If Ubisoft successfully executes stealth launches for both the Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed Black Flag remakes in quick succession, 2026 could shape up to be one of the publisher's strongest years in recent memory, capitalising on powerful nostalgia within the gaming community.
