UK Mobile Network Ranking Falls Behind Global Peers, VodafoneThree Warns
UK Mobile Networks Lag Globally, VodafoneThree Warns

UK Drops to Eighth in Global Mobile Network Rankings

The United Kingdom has slipped to eighth place in a global ranking of mobile network connectivity, trailing behind nations such as Norway, Australia, Germany, and Hungary, according to VodafoneThree’s Mobile Market Index. Singapore tops the list, followed by South Korea and the USA.

VodafoneThree, formed by the merger of Vodafone and Three, warns that the UK’s performance is being hampered by a combination of high energy costs, an emerging retirement gap among engineers, restrictive regulations, high spectrum charges, and intense market competition.

Investment Gap Threatens Future Progress

Despite recent improvements, the company cautions that the UK risks falling further behind as international competitors accelerate their investments in mobile infrastructure. Andrea Dona, Networks Director at VodafoneThree, stated: “Since the merger we have raised the bar for connectivity in the UK, eliminating thousands of not spots and providing millions of people with access to our fastest 5G speeds. But we cannot afford to lose momentum. Fast, reliable, and quality mobile networks are a fundamental driver of economic growth and prosperity.”

The index reveals that UK operators face the second-highest energy costs and the second most planning red tape among the countries surveyed. Additionally, Britain scored seven out of ten for the skills pipeline required to support the rollout of advanced networks.

Calls for Government Action

VodafoneThree is urging the government to support investment by removing regulatory and planning barriers and mitigating energy costs to bring the UK in line with other leading nations. Andrea Dona added: “Bringing the UK’s investment environment up to the standard of our international peers could help to support public services, eliminate digital divides and enable communities to thrive.”

The company is investing £11 billion across its network to achieve 99% 5G Standalone population coverage by 2030, underscoring its commitment to bridging the connectivity gap.
