Using a swearword in a Google search can prevent the AI overview from appearing, offering a simple way to bypass the feature. Some apps also allow users to disable artificial intelligence functions entirely, providing options for those wary of the technology.
Dr Kobi Leins, an AI management and governance expert, advocates for selective resistance. She recounted a situation where she refused AI transcription software for her child's medical appointment, but was told it was necessary due to the specialist's time constraints. She was informed she would need to seek care elsewhere if she objected.
Leins emphasises that individual resistance is challenging, but systemic pushback is also possible. She uses AI tools where they make sense, but avoids them otherwise, citing environmental concerns and a preference for writing her own thoughts. She holds a PhD and values the cognitive process of writing.
Leins advises a balanced approach: “It’s about what is evidence based and makes sense. It’s not getting caught up in the hype, and not getting caught up in the doom.” She believes people are capable of recognising both the positive and negative aspects of AI.
