Rangers are set to sign England international Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta, according to Mailsport. New Ibrox manager Derek McInnes has identified the 28-year-old centre-back as a key target and is hopeful of completing the deal before the new season.
Godfrey's Career Path
Godfrey moved to Serie A club Atalanta from Everton in 2024 for £11 million. He has since had loan spells at Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, and Danish side Brondby. The defender has two caps for England and made his name at Norwich City before a £20 million move to Everton in the Premier League.
Rangers' Defensive Overhaul
McInnes is keen to strengthen his defence after Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, and Derek Cornelius returned to their parent clubs this summer. Former Rangers captain James Tavernier has also left the club. The new manager has already added Ross McCrorie from Bristol City for around £1.5 million, and Godfrey is expected to be the next arrival on a season-long loan.
Godfrey is contracted at Atalanta until 2028. He was most recently on loan at Brondby, but McInnes has moved quickly to bring him to Ibrox for the start of the campaign.
