Newcastle United kicked off their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Darlington in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the KNOX training centre. Goals from Joe Willock, Will Osula, and Sean Neave secured the win for Eddie Howe's side against their National League North opponents.
First Half Dominance
Howe fielded a strong starting XI in the first half, featuring senior players such as Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, and new signing Sean Steur, alongside youngsters Leo Shahar and Alex Murphy. Jacob Murphy, who has been linked with a move away from Tyneside, created the opening goal with a cross from the right that Joe Willock tucked home from close range.
Willock, also the subject of exit talk, won a penalty after being fouled by Darlington defender Ben Hedley. Will Osula stepped up to convert the spot-kick, doubling United's lead and continuing his fine goalscoring form in 2026.
Second Half Changes
The second half saw an entirely different Newcastle side, headlined by new goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen but otherwise composed of under-21 and under-18 players. The most senior of those was Sean Neave, who spent most of last season around the first team and made his debut in the Champions League and Premier League.
The 19-year-old forward, keen for a loan move this summer, sealed the win with a goal, enhancing his prospects. Neave's performance served as a reminder of his potential as he looks to secure a temporary move away from St James' Park.
Pre-Season Schedule
Newcastle will play in front of fans for the first time this summer when they travel to Gateshead next Saturday. Their pre-season preparations also include matches against Bristol City, Valencia, Everton, Bayer Leverkusen, and Strasbourg.
According to the club, the friendly was part of a hectic pre-season schedule designed to build fitness and integrate new signings. The victory provides an early boost as Howe's side prepares for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
