Dan Burn's Newcastle contract clause revealed as World Cup warrior gets tempting option
Dan Burn's Newcastle contract clause revealed

Newcastle United sources have dismissed speculation that Dan Burn could be sold to Aston Villa, despite Unai Emery's side being linked with the 6ft 7in England defender. Instead, the Magpies are considering offering the 34-year-old a dream deal to keep him at the club until the end of his career.

Contract situation and option to extend

Burn is understood to have just one year left on his current deal, but Newcastle have an option to extend it to 2028. This would almost certainly mean the Carabao Cup hero would finish his career at the top with Newcastle. The club may revisit his contract situation after his standout performances for England at the World Cup.

Newcastle have already lost experienced stars such as Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali in the last six months. Losing Burn, who will start the new season on the back of a fantastic World Cup campaign, would be a significant blow.

Burn's remarkable journey

Burn's story is one of perseverance. He rose from Blyth Spartans' youth ranks to Darlington, then through the leagues with Yeovil, Birmingham and Fulham, before reaching Brighton in the Premier League and ultimately the World Cup with England. He signed for Newcastle for just £13 million from Brighton in 2022 when the club were bottom of the Premier League, and has since become one of the best pound-for-pound signings in modern club history, scoring a memorable header against Liverpool at Wembley.

Eddie Howe, speaking after Burn's World Cup call-up, said: "No one more deserving... just such an inspiring guy but also a very talented player. It's a great story, one of the great football stories, one of the great comebacks. Someone who had to do it the real hard way coming through the leagues."

Emotional World Cup exit

Burn admitted he was left 'haunted' by England's heartbreaking World Cup exit at the hands of Argentina on Wednesday night, which ended an astonishing fairy-tale story for the veteran defender. Despite the disappointment, his performances have solidified his importance to both club and country.
