An ITV analyst has been named the most disliked World Cup pundit currently on screen, according to a new study by British Gambler. Using media intelligence platform Meltwater, the research analyzed thousands of online conversations about every BBC and ITV pundit during the tournament's opening 11 days, measuring the proportion of positive and negative sentiment attached to each personality.
Christina Unkel Tops Negativity Rankings
Christina Unkel, a former FIFA official who serves as ITV's referee analyst, received a negativity rating of 68 percent, considerably higher than any other pundit included in the research. Her expertise has not gone down well among World Cup fans on social media, despite her experience officiating internationally and in professional domestic leagues in the United States.
Duncan Ferguson ranked second with a 56 percent negativity rating, while Karen Carney (51 percent) and Emma Hayes (41 percent) also featured prominently among the most criticized pundits.
BBC Pundits Fare Better
The BBC punditry team, which includes Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer, Micah Richards, and Joe Hart, generally received a more favorable reception from viewers. Darren Cann, another referee analyst, was the least popular BBC pundit with a 42 percent negativity rating, while Danny Murphy (35 percent) also proved divisive among viewers.
Interestingly, former France striker Olivier Giroud recorded the highest positive sentiment of any pundit in the study with a 48 percent rating, despite being widely criticized on social media, with some fans urging the BBC to sack him before the knockout stages.
ITV's Star-Studded Lineup
ITV has assembled a star-studded punditry team for the World Cup, including Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Juan Mata, Patrick Vieira, Ange Postecoglou, and Duncan Ferguson, alongside a studio in New York City. The broadcaster has invested heavily in big-name guests for the tournament.
