Man Utd planning five new signings with three midfielders targeted

Manchester United are preparing to make at least five new signings in the summer transfer window, with midfield a key focus as they aim to bolster their squad for a return to the Champions League. The club could bring in three midfielders, with Casemiro set to depart upon the expiry of his contract in June.

A host of Premier League stars have been linked, including Tyler Adams, Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Matheus Fernandes, Joao Gomes, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Adam Wharton. Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni and Atalanta's Ederson are also reported targets. According to the Sun, United intend to sign two midfielders, but the sale of Manuel Ugarte would help finance a third.

Elsewhere, the club are looking for a new backup goalkeeper, with Andre Onana potentially joining Trabzonspor on a permanent basis, and current No.2 Altay Bayindir seeking more playing time. Left-back is another area under consideration despite Luke Shaw's largely injury-free season, as Tyrell Malacia's contract expires and Patrick Dorgu has impressed in more advanced roles.

A backup striker is also on the shopping list, with Joshua Zirkzee tipped to leave, opening a spot for a No.9 to compete with Benjamin Sesko. Saturday's 0-0 draw away to Sunderland provided further evidence of the need for investment, with interim manager Michael Carrick forced into changes due to the absences of Casemiro and Sesko.
