Four England players are walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against Norway. Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi, and Nico O'Reilly each carry a yellow card into the match, meaning another booking would trigger a one-match suspension and rule them out of a potential semi-final.
Current Suspension Rules
Under FIFA tournament regulations, any player who receives two yellow cards in separate matches during the competition is automatically suspended for one game. Since these four England stars were cautioned in previous knockout rounds, a further yellow card against Norway would sideline them for the next fixture.
If England advance and the quartet avoids a booking in the quarter-final, their yellow cards will be wiped clean after the quarter-final stage. This means no player can miss the World Cup final due to yellow card accumulation from the semi-finals onward; only a red card can lead to a suspension for the final.
Who Is Already Suspended?
Defender Jarell Quansah is the only England player definitely missing the quarter-final. The 23-year-old centre-back received a straight red card in the 54th minute of England's 3-2 last-16 win over Mexico for a heavy sliding tackle on Jesus Gallardo. Under FIFA rules, a direct red card carries an automatic one-match ban, ruling him out of the Norway clash in Miami.
However, Quansah's suspension extends beyond the quarter-final. FIFA deemed the challenge a breach of Article 14 of its code of conduct, which triggers a two-game suspension for serious foul play. This means Quansah will also miss the semi-final if England progress, and he can only return for the final.
What Happens After the Quarter-Final?
If Rice, Bellingham, Guehi, and O'Reilly avoid a yellow card against Norway, their disciplinary slate will be cleared. From the semi-finals onward, yellow cards no longer accumulate toward a suspension; only a red card can result in missing the final. This rule ensures that no player is barred from the showpiece match due to two yellow cards.
England face Norway at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 local time. The winners will meet either Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals.
