Newcastle CEO Hopkinson in New York for PIF meeting amid Pope squad number hint
Newcastle CEO meets PIF in NY; Pope keeps No.1

Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson is in New York for a meeting with the club's owners, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), across the Atlantic. The club's chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, is expected to be in New Jersey this weekend for the World Cup final, with PIF as one of the official tournament supporters, their branding visible across venues from Vancouver to Dallas to Mexico City.

Hopkinson's US trip and commercial push

The catch-up between Hopkinson and the ownership comes as Newcastle have completed three signings and two major sales in what is shaping up to be a busy summer. It has been over three months since Al-Rumayyan sanctioned summer spending and recruitment plans. PIF remain committed to the long-term plan at Newcastle, but Hopkinson is leading the club on a day-to-day basis, with the Saudi-backers keen to have a high-powered CEO pursuing opportunities at boardroom level.

Chronicle Live understands that Hopkinson's trip will also include meetings with new sponsors KNOX and Adidas, plus talks with four prospective new commercial partners. PIF's presence at the tournament was arranged ahead of the 2034 World Cup, which will take place in Saudi Arabia.

Mohamed AlSayyad, Head of Corporate Brand at PIF, said: “PIF continues to expand its global footprint in sport, with football at the heart of this growth. This partnership builds on our existing FIFA relationship from last year’s FIFA Club World Cup – and our work with Concacaf – to deliver a positive and lasting impact. PIF continues to accelerate the growth of football globally by expanding access to the game and creating opportunities that benefit players, fans and the wider football ecosystem.”

Nick Pope retains squad number

Long-serving goalkeeper Nick Pope is back on Tyneside for the start of the 2026/27 season despite considerable talk about his future. The 34-year-old has one year left on his contract and has been linked with Ipswich Town, Hull and Leeds, but no official bid has been placed for the England international. Pope returned to training this week and is still listed as No.1 internally, retaining both his squad number and locker number at the start of pre-season.

The small hint behind the scenes suggests that Pope remains fully respected and did not return to any unpleasant surprises. In 2019, Dwight Gayle returned for pre-season from a loan stint with West Brom to discover his No.9 shirt had been taken from him and his locker had been moved down the dressing room to No.12. But Newcastle are determined to show more sensitivity these days, rather than resorting to brutal moments like the Gayle incident, or even worse, when Rob Lee did not receive a squad number at all under Ruud Gullit. Lee was eventually reinstated and handed squad number 37.

Legends celebrate new sponsorship in Malta

Newcastle have linked up with VisitMalta to sponsor their annual weekender in 2026, with games against Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg to come. The Magpies sent a delegation to Malta to announce the August football festival on Tyneside, and it appears the club are stepping up their ambassador game. United flew out Keith Gillespie, Nobby Solano and Ryan Taylor to do the honours, thrilling supporters in Malta along the way.
