Lorenzo Musetti has withdrawn from Wimbledon as he continues to recover from a rectus femoris injury, dealing another significant blow to the tournament. The world No. 15 has not played since sustaining the injury at the Italian Open, his home tournament, and also missed Roland Garros last month.
Musetti's Decision
Musetti, who reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon two years ago, announced his decision on social media on Wednesday. He wrote: 'I want to update you on my recovery from the injury I sustained in Rome: rehabilitation is going very well and the medical results are encouraging. Unfortunately, as I have not yet been able to begin a full athletic training program, and after careful evaluation, we have come to the difficult conclusion that I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon this year. It is not an easy decision, but it is the right one. My priority is to return to the court at 100%. Thank you for your continued support — see you soon.'
Growing List of Absentees
Musetti's withdrawal is the latest in a series of high-profile pullouts. Two-time former champion Carlos Alcaraz is out due to an ongoing wrist injury. Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Cazaux have also withdrawn from the men's draw. On the women's side, British star Sonay Kartal is out with a back injury, while world No. 9 Victoria Mboko withdrew after slipping on the grass at Queen's last week and sustaining an MCL injury. Hailey Baptiste and Veronika Kudermetova are also absent.
Impact on Wimbledon
The string of withdrawals poses challenges for tournament organisers, who are now without several marquee names. Musetti's absence, in particular, removes a recent semi-finalist from the draw, reducing the depth of talent on display. Fans will be hoping for no further pullouts as the tournament approaches.
