The Football Association has made a special request to the wives and girlfriends of England players to provide personal gifts and keepsakes for their hotel rooms at the World Cup. The initiative aims to help the squad feel at home during their stay at The Inn at Meadowbrook in Kansas.
Personal Touches in Player Rooms
FA officials asked the WAGs to supply photographs, keepsakes, and gifts, which were placed in the players' rooms before their arrival. Photos were scanned onto iPads and left in the rooms, while a basketball hoop, games room, and televisions were installed for communal entertainment.
England goalkeeper James Trafford revealed that his partner bought him a Lego tractor set because he grew up on a farm in Cumbria and can drive one. She also left a series of presents for him to open weekly, with other WAGs doing the same for their partners.
Trafford's Reaction
Trafford said: 'There was a little iPad and there was photos, like a slideshow, and I can see my sisters sending them in. It was a nice surprise. The first photo was me and my missus. Then I had a box that my missus did for us. It was quite nice little personal touches.'
He added: 'She put a few things to open at different stages. She put two face masks in there. Very thoughtful. And she put in a Lego set. My missus has no clue about football. I told her that we'll probably be away for a month and a half, seven weeks. She took my word for it and put a thing in for every different week.'
The Lego set is a tractor, reflecting his farming background. 'I'm a farmer, aren't I? She gave me a tractor to build. It's not the biggest but I haven't built it yet. We've only been here a day. I don't want to jump the gun too early.'
Facilities at the Base
The hotel also features a basketball hoop, communal areas, a recovery place, pools, a sauna, and a relaxation area. Trafford noted that the basketball was popular, but he preferred watching football with Scotland on television.
The FA's efforts underscore the importance of player well-being during the tournament, with personal touches helping to create a supportive environment.
