Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations Review – Best DLC of the Year
Doom: Dark Ages Revelations Review – Best DLC of Year

Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations is an exceptional DLC expansion, earning a 9/10 score, yet its release was overshadowed by the layoff of over 130 id Software employees, including most of the Revelations team, the same week it launched. This may be the last Doom for a long time, but it's a high note to go out on.

Exceptional Gameplay Innovations

The expansion introduces the Chain Spear, a versatile weapon that enhances mobility and combat options. It can be thrown to pull the player toward enemies or nodes, allowing for dynamic positioning and projectile deflection. Upgrades unlock auto-orbiting, javelin attacks, stabs, and ground pounds, each effective against specific enemy types. This brings back the tactical depth of Doom Eternal while feeling entirely unique.

Level Design and Content

Revelations shifts away from The Dark Ages' open-world areas to more focused, Eternal-like levels. Secrets are no longer marked on the map, encouraging exploration. The central hub features Metroidvania-style progression, with new abilities unlocking additional areas. Post-game rewards include redesigned maps from the original Doom. The campaign lasts six to seven hours, with many spending double that due to difficulty and secrets.

Addressing Previous Flaws

Unlike most expansions, Revelations reacts to criticisms of the parent game. It removes the shield early on, forcing players to rely on the spear and full arsenal. The storytelling remains incomprehensible, but the combat focus is unrelenting. The tonal mismatch between serious lore and over-the-top action persists, but it's a minor distraction.

Conclusion

Revelations is the best modern Doom experience, combining the best of Eternal and The Dark Ages. If Microsoft had sense, they'd release it standalone. Instead, they laid off the developers. Score: 9/10. Formats: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC. Price: £17.99. Requires Doom: The Dark Ages. Publisher: Bethesda. Developer: id Software. Release: July 7, 2026.
