Jude Bellingham has downplayed his heated confrontation with Lionel Messi during England's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, stating they were merely 'discussing a foul' and that it was a privilege to play against the iconic forward.
England's World Cup heartbreak
Argentina secured a dramatic 2-1 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with Messi providing assists for Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to overturn England's lead. Anthony Gordon had put England ahead ten minutes into the second half, converting Morgan Rogers' cross. However, England's ultra-defensive approach after taking the lead proved costly, as Argentina mounted relentless attacks.
Manager Thomas Tuchel faced criticism for his tactical switch, though he insisted he had 'no regrets'. The FA reportedly plans to keep faith with Tuchel, who signed a two-year extension in February, keeping him in charge through Euro 2028.
The Bellingham-Messi exchange
During a pause in play in the fourth minute, Bellingham and Messi were seen engaged in a fiery exchange, with both gesticulating. Bellingham explained: 'We were discussing a foul actually. But no, it was nothing, nothing bad. I thought there was a foul earlier and he said, “What about the one on me?” and I was saying, “Well you’re strong enough to take them”, but no, it was a privilege to play against him.'
Bellingham added: 'I’m obviously on the losing side which hurts a lot. But it was a privilege to line up against him.'
Emotional aftermath
Bellingham expressed his disappointment: 'I wanted to be a part of an England squad that finally did it, finally got it over the line. To be here telling the fans unfortunately the same things they’ve probably heard for years and years, it’s really gutting. I wish I could say more, I wish I could give one more win or two more wins. But yeah, at the moment my head’s a bit fuzzy with disappointment so I’m sorry.'
England will face France in the third-place playoff on Saturday, while Argentina prepares to meet Spain in Sunday's final.
