Reece James Warns England Fans to Expect World Cup Weather Delays
Reece James: England Must Embrace World Cup Weather Delays

Reece James has warned England fans to get used to weather delays at the World Cup. England's final pre-tournament friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando was delayed by an hour due to a thunderstorm, leaving TV viewers waiting and fans in the US seeking shelter from torrential rain.

Storm Forces Delay in Orlando

The England players remained at their hotel, 10 minutes from the stadium, until receiving the all-clear to proceed. Such delays are common in the United States, where strict rules on electrical storms require a 30-minute wait after any lightning strike within a 10-mile radius before outdoor activities can resume.

Armchair viewers should prepare for similar interruptions throughout the tournament. FIFA expects delays but assures every game will be completed, simply put on hold until conditions improve. For England fans, this is a new concept, but James grew accustomed to it during the Club World Cup last summer.

James Draws on Club World Cup Experience

During Chelsea's Club World Cup match against Benfica, play was suspended for nearly two hours with five minutes left and Chelsea leading 1-0. Upon resumption, Benfica equalised, though Chelsea eventually won after a total playing time of four hours and 38 minutes. James says England must adapt.

Reece James said: "Yeah, it’s just completely different to playing in Europe, with the delays, the weather. We try to pass on information to the rest of the team and stay patient and calm. We weren’t at the stadium while it was happening; we stayed in a hotel a bit longer. It's difficult. You just rest a bit more and chill and wait for the call to leave."

He added: "We had a few delays last year. It’s something both teams have to deal with, and we just have to prepare the best we can. Embracing it is part of that. It's the same for both teams."

In-Game Delays Different from Pre-Match

James noted that in-game delays are harder than pre-match delays. "Having to stop at 85 minutes when you are 1-0 up was difficult last year. Hopefully we don't have to put up with that this year."

James is clearly Thomas Tuchel's first-choice right-back, given their close relationship from Chelsea. He also showed against Costa Rica that he is in good form, fit, and unfazed by questions about his ability to play consecutive games after injury issues.

England Can Win the World Cup

James is convinced England can win the World Cup and loved Tuchel's inspiring speech about "climbing the mountain." He said: "I can play three 90s a week. I came back at the end of last season, played in the last few games, and I’m feeling good. Timing is everything. I've missed a few major tournaments. I have tried to be ready and as well prepared as possible for this one, and I'll give my country my all."

He added: "I had an amazing time with the manager at Chelsea and I am happy he is the boss. I’m glad to work with him. For sure, that’s why we’re here. We don’t come to take part; we're on the mountain, still climbing. There's still room to go. It’s good the fans are in good spirits, but the tournament is yet to start, so we have a long way to go."
