New footage has shed further light on the ugly altercation involving Jude Bellingham after England's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. Tensions boiled over at the final whistle in Atlanta after Thomas Tuchel's side surrendered a late lead to lose 2-1 and miss out on a place in Sunday's final.
Bellingham's Confrontation with Barco
Bellingham was seen confronting Argentina substitute Valentin Barco as the South American players celebrated their dramatic victory. Initial clips appeared to show the Real Madrid midfielder striking Barco in the face before the pair exchanged shoves and angry words. However, further footage has now revealed the apparent reason behind Bellingham's furious reaction.
Barco, who did not feature in the match, had earlier charged towards England's players following Enzo Fernandez's equaliser rather than immediately celebrating with his own team-mates. The 21-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea, appeared to direct his celebrations towards the England bench and had to be pulled away by an official. He escaped any further punishment for that incident, but it seemingly remained fresh in Bellingham's mind when the final whistle sounded.
New Angle Shows Sequence of Events
The new angle shows Bellingham initially standing and watching Argentina's celebrations before exchanging a handshake with another opponent. He then spotted Barco joining a group of Argentina players and quickly moved towards him. Bellingham appeared to make contact with Barco's face before the pair began pushing one another and trading heated words. A wider confrontation then threatened to break out as players and staff from both teams rushed towards the scene. England midfielder Morgan Rogers also had to be restrained, while reserve goalkeeper Dean Henderson stepped in between Bellingham and several Argentina players.
England's Heartbreaking Defeat
The flashpoint came at the end of a desperately painful night for England. Anthony Gordon had given the Three Lions the lead in the 55th minute and Tuchel's side were just five minutes away from reaching their first World Cup final since 1966. But Fernandez levelled with a powerful long-range effort in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez headed home Lionel Messi's cross in stoppage time. England had increasingly retreated after going ahead, with Tuchel coming under fierce criticism for making a series of defensive substitutions and leaving his side without an effective attacking outlet.
The late collapse sparked wild Argentina celebrations and frustration among England's players, with Bellingham's confrontation with Barco becoming one of the defining images from the immediate aftermath.
