The Football Association has decided to retain Thomas Tuchel as England head coach despite the team's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. England lost 2-1 after a second-half collapse, with goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez overturning Anthony Gordon's opener.
Tuchel's Substitutions Under Fire
Tuchel faced criticism for making three defensive substitutions after taking the lead, a move that allowed Argentina to increase pressure on Jordan Pickford's goal. Former England captain Wayne Rooney claimed Tuchel's negative decisions 'cost England the game'. Tuchel defended his changes, stating they were tactical adjustments to protect the lead.
Contract Extension and Future Plans
In February, Tuchel signed a contract extension keeping him as England head coach through Euro 2028, which will be co-hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. Despite the World Cup exit, the FA wants Tuchel to lead the team into the next major tournament. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said: 'It is heart-breaking to be so close. The players and Thomas gave it everything today.'
Looking Ahead to Euro 2028
England will face France in Saturday's third-place play-off at 10pm BST. Tuchel said after the defeat: 'There is still a match to play [against France]... Then we keep on going. I have a contract until the home Euros and I’m looking forward to that even though right now, it’s difficult to look that far ahead.'
