England were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Ghana in their second World Cup group match in Boston, with Thomas Tuchel's side failing to secure an early knockout-stage berth. After a thrilling opening win against Croatia, the Three Lions struggled to break down a resolute Ghanaian defence, managing few clear-cut chances.
Tuchel's changes fail to spark winner
Tuchel's tactical adjustments, which proved decisive against Croatia, were less effective this time. While England improved after the break, they could not find a winner. Victory would have confirmed their place in the last 16, but they now must wait until Saturday's match against Panama to make it official. Four points will almost certainly be enough to advance.
Player ratings: Key performers and strugglers
Jordan Pickford – 5: Had little to do but was caught in no-man's land midway through the second half, sparking a brief panic. The decision went England's way, but Ghana's bench was furious.
Reece James – 5: A poor outing from the Chelsea skipper, offering little offensively and caught upfield when Ghana countered.
Ezri Konsa – 6: Defended well against Antoine Semenyo, cutting inside on multiple occasions, and played a decisive role in denying Ghana a late winner by pressuring Prince Adu when he had an open goal.
Marc Guehi – 5: Recalled to the side ahead of John Stones after starting on the bench against Croatia, but had a quiet game.
Djed Spence – 6: Given the nod ahead of Nico O'Reilly, offered a real presence down the left going forward and kept to his defensive duties.
Declan Rice – 5: Failed to produce the telling pass when required. Much of the pre-game talk focused on his enormous workload for Arsenal last season, and he looked slightly jaded.
Elliot Anderson – 6: The more inventive of the midfield pairing, playing 20 passes into the final third and having four shots on goal before being replaced.
Noni Madueke – 4: Another difficult night for the Arsenal winger. Found himself in good positions but too often failed to pick out a teammate. Ghana doubling up on him didn't help, but he did little to justify another start once Bukayo Saka is fit.
Jude Bellingham – 7: Drove his team forward and tracked back to help when Reece James and Djed Spence were upfield. Looked the most likely to create something before being replaced by Morgan Rodgers.
Anthony Gordon – 5: A quiet game after being preferred to Marcus Rashford. Reluctant to come inside on his right to shoot and left Spence isolated when Ghana attacked.
Harry Kane – 5: Largely suffocated by Ghana in the first half, getting just nine touches – two of which were in the penalty area. Had the goal gaping in the final five minutes but hammered the ball over the bar.
Substitutes fail to make impact
England's substitutes, including Morgan Rodgers, could not alter the outcome. The draw leaves England needing at least a point against Panama to guarantee progression, though four points is expected to be enough.
