Foxes are a common sight in urban gardens, often sniffing around or even denning under sheds. For those wanting to support these bushy-tailed visitors, the RSPCA has shared guidance on what foods are safe to offer.
Feeding foxes: A kind act
RSPCA wildlife expert Evie Button emphasised the importance of foxes in the ecosystem. She said: "Like all wildlife, foxes have their important part to play in our balanced ecosystem."
"They're imperative in population control of wild animals such as rabbits, mice and rats. They eat dead and decaying animals. And as omnivores they also play an important role in dispersing seeds."
Button praised garden owners willing to feed foxes, calling it a "lovely way to help wildlife thrive" and a "very simple kind act" aligned with the RSPCA's Summer of Kindness campaign. She advised speaking to neighbours first, as foxes are shy and tend to visit at night.
What to feed foxes
- Tinned cat or dog food
- Fruits such as blueberries, cherries, apples, figs and pears
- Cheese or peanuts on occasion, as treats
Foods to avoid
- Grapes or raisins
- Meat bones
- Junk food
- Sweet food
Button added: "Never hand-feed them and try not to put out too much food."
Supporting wildlife in summer
The Summer of Kindness campaign encourages people to consider animals during hot months, when wildlife may struggle. Other ways to help include planting flowers for pollinators, feeding hedgehogs, making a wildlife rescue box, and making pet treats.
