Phil Mickelson's Heartwarming Masters Gesture to Locker Room Staff Uncovered
Phil Mickelson, the celebrated golfer with three Masters titles to his name, will be notably absent from this year's tournament at Augusta National. His absence is felt not just by fans but also by the locker room staff, with whom he shared a special connection. This bond was vividly illustrated in a recent revelation from his former caddie, Jim 'Bones' Mackay, who recounted a poignant parking lot incident following Mickelson's first Masters victory in 2004.
The Emotional Parking Lot Encounter After a Historic Win
Mickelson secured his inaugural Masters title 22 years ago, finally donning the coveted Green Jacket after 12 attempts at the prestigious major championship. This victory granted him a permanent spot in the champions' locker room, a privilege reserved for golf's elite. Mackay, who caddied for Mickelson during all three of his Masters wins, described a late-night scene in the Augusta National parking lot that speaks volumes about Mickelson's character.
"There we are, he's won the Masters, it's 6.30pm on a Sunday evening and I don't see this guy for like three or four hours," Mackay told No Laying Up. "So I'm sitting in this parking lot or near it outside the Augusta National clubhouse and it must have been 10 o'clock. I look out to his car and I see some figures. It's pitch dark out there and it's Phil and these two or three other people around him."
As Mackay approached to assist with packing, he witnessed an emotional embrace. "They're not just hugging him, it's like an emotional hug... I'm like, 'Man, who are these guys hugging Phil?' It turns out these are the guys that work in the lower locker room at Augusta National (that) Phil's been tipping all these years and taking such good care of." The staff were devastated because Mickelson's promotion to the champions' locker room meant they would lose their regular interactions with him, leading to a heartfelt farewell in the dark parking lot.
Mickelson's Absence from the 2026 Masters Tournament
Despite this enduring legacy, Mickelson will not compete in the 2026 Masters, as he recently announced his withdrawal due to family reasons. In a statement on social media, he expressed, "Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter. I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club, and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck, and I will be watching."
This decision underscores the personal challenges he faces, even as his past actions continue to resonate within the golf community. The story shared by Mackay highlights not just Mickelson's success on the course but also his genuine relationships off it, particularly with the unsung heroes of Augusta National.
Mickelson's career, marked by crowd-favorite status and major victories, is now complemented by this touching anecdote, reminding fans that sportsmanship extends beyond trophies. As the Masters proceeds without him, the memory of that parking lot hug serves as a testament to the lasting impact athletes can have on those behind the scenes.
