Rugby Legend Gareth Thomas Slams Homophobic Trolls and HIV Stigma in Emotional Social Media Post
Gareth Thomas hits back at homophobic trolls and HIV stigma

Former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas has delivered a powerful response to online trolls targeting his sexuality and HIV status, sharing an emotional message on social media.

The 49-year-old sports legend, who came out as gay in 2009 and revealed his HIV-positive diagnosis in 2019, posted a screenshot of abusive comments alongside a heartfelt caption condemning discrimination.

Standing Against Hate

Thomas wrote: "Still dealing with this level of ignorance in 2023. HIV can't be passed on through saliva, and being gay doesn't define my character." The screenshot showed vile messages including false claims about HIV transmission and homophobic slurs.

Education Over Ignorance

The rugby star used the opportunity to educate followers: "People living with HIV who are on effective treatment can't pass it on. This is scientifically proven." He emphasised that such misinformation contributes to ongoing stigma.

A History of Advocacy

Thomas has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in sports since becoming the first openly gay professional rugby union player. His 2019 HIV disclosure made him one of the few high-profile athletes to speak openly about living with the virus.

The sportsman concluded his post with a message of resilience: "I won't let ignorance silence me. We must keep challenging these harmful attitudes." His post has since received thousands of supportive responses from fans and fellow athletes.
