Ben Earl on Lions lessons transforming his rugby

Ben Earl, the dynamic Saracens and England back-rower, has credited his experience with the British & Irish Lions as a pivotal moment in his career, shaping his approach to the game at both club and international level.

In an exclusive interview, the 27-year-old revealed how the intensity and pressure of touring with the Lions in 2025 provided invaluable lessons that he's since implemented into his performances for Saracens and England.

Lions Experience: A Game-Changer

"The Lions tour was unlike anything I'd experienced before," Earl admitted. "The level of scrutiny, the quality of opposition, and the need to perform every single day - it forced me to raise my game in ways I didn't think possible."

Earl, who earned his first Lions cap during the tour, explained how the experience helped him develop both physically and mentally. "You're training and playing alongside the best players from four nations. Every session is a masterclass, every match a test of character."

Bringing Lessons Back to Saracens

The flanker has since translated these lessons into standout performances for Saracens in the Premiership. "I returned with a new understanding of what it takes to perform at the very highest level," Earl said. "My decision-making, my work-rate, even my recovery routines - everything improved after that tour."

Saracens' coaching staff have noticed the difference, with head coach Mark McCall praising Earl's "newfound maturity and leadership qualities" that have emerged since his Lions experience.

England Ambitions

With England's autumn internationals approaching, Earl is determined to cement his place in the national setup. "The Lions tour showed me what international rugby at the very top looks like," he said. "Now I want to bring that level to every England performance."

Earl's development comes at a crucial time for English rugby, with the national team rebuilding after the 2023 World Cup. His improved physicality and game intelligence, honed during the Lions tour, make him a key figure in England's plans.

As the new season progresses, all eyes will be on whether Earl can maintain his impressive form and help both Saracens and England achieve their ambitious goals.
