Tunisia boss Sabri Lamouchi has been sacked following his side's hammering at the hands of Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. Lamouchi watched on as his side were torn apart 5-1 by Graham Potter's team, who ran riot in Monterrey.
Match Details
Yasin Ayari scored a brace, while there were also goals from Alexander Isak, Mattias Svanberg and former Swansea City striker Viktor Gyokeres. Potter himself is a former Swan, having been head coach there for the 2018-19 season.
Lamouchi's South Wales Connections
Lamouchi also has south Wales connections, having been in charge of Swansea's fierce rivals Cardiff City toward the end of the 2022-23 season. The Frenchman is now out of work again following a nightmare start for his Tunisian side, in a performance that left supporters furious.
Journalist Romain Molina reports: “It’s the end for Sabri Lamouchi at the helm of the Tunisian national team.”
Player Apology
Tunisia star Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida faced the press after the defeat and issued a message to the country’s supporters. “We suffered a heavy defeat because of small details and mistakes,” he told La Presse. “At this level, against a team like Sweden, when you make such serious mistakes, you pay a heavy price. Sweden were more efficient, they exploited all our mistakes. We apologise to the Tunisian public after this defeat. We will try to make up for it and correct our course in the next match. We absolutely need more concentration in the future.”
New Coach Appointed
Reports claim Mondher Kebaier will now take over and attempt to salvage something from what is already looking a disastrous campaign. Tunisia are back in action on June 21, where they will face Japan, before then taking on the Netherlands five days later.
