England defender Djed Spence will continue to wear his distinctive protective face mask when the Three Lions face Norway in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday evening. The 25-year-old Tottenham Hotspur full-back has used the custom-moulded carbon-fibre covering throughout the entire tournament in North America.
Serious Jaw Fracture
Spence sustained a painful broken jaw during a Premier League match in May after a collision with an elbow from Chelsea striker Liam Delap. The facial trauma required immediate medical attention and a lengthy recovery period.
Recovery Timeline
Medical experts estimated the severe fracture would take approximately three months to heal completely. Because of this extended recovery window, Spence had no choice but to rely on the specialised mask to safely participate in England's summer campaign.
Despite the discomfort, Spence showcased his toughness by playing for Spurs just five days after the injury, helping them secure a vital victory over Everton to guarantee top-flight survival.
Adapting to Conditions
Spence has admitted that wearing the heavy gear in the sweltering heat is far from ideal. However, he has worked tirelessly to break it in during training sessions and has successfully adapted to playing with it across the tournament.
He has maintained a positive attitude about the injury, joking before the competition: "Luckily I play football with my feet and not my jaw."
Managerial Trust
England boss Thomas Tuchel has shown immense faith in the masked defender after a challenging domestic season. Spence has featured heavily in the group stages and came on in the recent knockout victory over Mexico, proving his worth to the national squad.
Norwich Clash
Spence will hope his protective gear holds up against a physical Norwegian side this weekend. With injuries impacting England's defensive depth, he is expected to play a major role in the quarter-final showdown.
