Thomas Tuchel updates on Reece James injury and right-back pick vs Norway
Tuchel explains England right-back selection vs Norway

Thomas Tuchel has explained his decision to start Ezri Konsa at right-back for England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway, while providing an update on Reece James' injury status. The Chelsea captain has been sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained during the 0-0 draw with Ghana in the group stage.

Konsa, normally a centre-back, has been deployed at full-back after Jarell Quansah's red card against Mexico limited Tuchel's options. Djed Spence and Quansah had previously filled in at right-back, but Spence has also been used at left-back during the tournament.

Tuchel's right-back conundrum

Speaking ahead of the last-eight encounter at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, Tuchel said: "We lost another right back with Jarell Quansah and his red card. Reece James is available but maybe not for 90 minutes - I'd like to have him as an option from the bench. Ezri Konsa played there for us on the highest level, John Stones trained on the highest level and had a good match in Mexico."

Stones partnered Marc Guehi at centre-back, with Konsa shifting to right-back. Guehi had been an injury concern with a hamstring strain but was passed fit. Declan Rice also overcame an injury to start alongside Elliot Anderson in midfield, while Noni Madueke replaced Bukayo Saka on the right flank.

Impact on England's defence

The reshuffle saw John Stones return to the starting lineup after recovering from his own fitness issues, providing stability at the back. Konsa's versatility has been key for England, having previously played right-back against Mexico after Quansah's dismissal. Tuchel's decision to keep James on the bench suggests a cautious approach to his recovery, with the Chelsea star not yet ready for a full 90 minutes.
