Scotland player ratings vs Brazil: McKenna howler leads to misery

Scotland’s World Cup progression hopes are now hanging by a thread after a painful 3-0 defeat to Brazil in Miami, a self-inflicted battering that leaves Steve Clarke’s side anxiously waiting on other results. The loss in Group C means Scotland must rely on being one of the best third-placed finishers, a fate that will not be clarified until all groups conclude at the weekend.

Defensive errors prove costly

For the second straight game, brutal defending left Scotland trailing early. After Grant Hanley’s offside trap blunder gifted Morocco a winner in the opening match, it took just seven minutes for Scott McKenna—selected to replace Hanley—to commit a horror error. McKenna was dispossessed in his own box by Rayan, allowing Vinicius Junior to calmly slot past Angus Gunn.

Jack Hendry also had a moment to forget when he lost the ball to Vinicius, who rolled in another effort. However, VAR intervened, ruling that Vinicius had fouled Hendry before stealing possession, and the goal was chalked off. But there was no escape in first-half stoppage time when failure to clear lines led to Bruno Guimaraes lofting a ball to the back post. Gunn and Nathan Patterson misjudged the delivery, and Vinicius headed into an unguarded net.

Second-half struggles

Had Gunn not denied Rayan in first-half stoppage time, it would have been 3-0 at the break. The third goal arrived on the hour when Guimaraes set up Matheus Cunha to stroke home. Scotland’s attacking threat was minimal, with Scott McTominay testing Alisson with a couple of headers in the second period, but Clarke’s team could not score.

Player ratings

Here’s how Record Sport’s Craig Swan rated the players:

Angus Gunn – 5: Completely exposed for McKenna’s error, beaten by Vinicius for the VAR-cancelled effort, and caught under the ball for the second goal. Made a great save from Rayan and two more from Vinicius, but no chance for Cunha’s strike.

Nathan Patterson – 5: Difficult night dealing with Vinicius down his side. Helped Ferguson clear Cunha’s effort but lost Vinicius at the far post for the second goal. Weak penalty appeal dismissed after the break.

Jack Hendry – 4: Attempted composure but was sloppy when robbed by Vinicius, saved by VAR. Chased Vinicius in vain as Gunn saved a one-on-one. Difficult night.

Scott McKenna – 4: Nightmare entrance. Replaced Hanley but gifted the opener when Rayan picked his pocket. Miscued a header from McGinn’s delivery and blocked a late Gabriel effort, but the damage was done.

Andy Robertson – 3: Lasted just 45 minutes. Punished for a pass in his own box that led to Vinicius’s second goal, and outfoxed by Rayan when Gunn made a great save. Did not appear for the second period.

Lewis Ferguson – 6: Carried excellent performances into the match. Left a mark on Paqueta, had an ambitious strike deflected wide, made a vital clearance from Cunha, and curled a free-kick saved by Alisson. Never stopped pushing forward.

Kenny McLean – 5: First World Cup start. Patrolled the area in front of the back four alongside Ferguson, tried to pick up Cunha when he dropped deep. Went down in the box attempting to get onto Shankland’s flick, brushed aside by Guimaraes for the third goal.

John McGinn – 5: Battled away with little joy. Tempting delivery from a corner that McKenna could not convert, took the armband at the restart, and combined with Tierney for McTominay’s header. Improved in the second period.

Scott McTominay – 5: Advanced role to get close to Shankland. Robbed by Cunha leading to a Vinicius shot, no influence in the first half. Attacked the box after the restart for a powerful header at Alisson, another header superbly saved, scooped a chance over, and had an injury-time shot saved.

Ben Gannon-Doak – 4: Named on the right, tried to get at Santos. Swapped sides before the break, took a fresh air swipe at a shooting chance, and choked another effort. Unable to get into the game; replaced by Christie.

Lawrence Shankland – 5: Selected ahead of Che Adams. Difficult task against Gabriel and Marquinhos. Some nice touches linking play, scuffed shot almost scooped home by McTominay, glanced header over as Scotland hunted a goal.
