Arsenal's defensive vulnerabilities were laid bare once more as they fell to a 3-2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup, marking the second consecutive match in which they conceded three goals. With the Premier League opener against newly-promoted Coventry City less than two weeks away, the champions are still searching for solidity at the back.
Backline Concerns Mount
Having also shipped three goals in a defeat to Real Betis, it remains unclear whether Arsenal's issues are merely a case of ring rust or a sign of life without William Saliba. Context is important: just over a year ago, the Gunners lost 3-2 at home to Villarreal in a similarly disjointed display, only to follow it with a 3-0 demolition of Athletic Club and a historic campaign.
However, Arsenal currently look fortunate that none of their direct rivals, aside from Tottenham, have significantly strengthened. While they remain favourites to retain their title, the backline is not clicking in Saliba's absence, and there is a worrying lack of defensive depth.
Injuries and Fitness Risks
Ben White, who managed only 12 top-flight appearances last season, is back from an MCL injury, but the club is placing great faith in his fitness record with Jurrien Timber still sidelined. Dortmund sliced through Arsenal for their opener inside seven minutes, and Konstantinos Karetsas, a player Arsenal tracked last summer, added a superb second. After Ethan Nwaneri pulled one back, Arsenal were undone by a chaotic set-piece.
With the expanded 48-team World Cup taking a toll on players, Arsenal, more than most, need to manage their stars carefully. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Saliba all carried varying degrees of pain last season, and Arteta cannot afford Rice or Gabriel to break down now.
Transfer Priorities
Bruno Guimaraes' £75 million arrival will help protect Rice's conditioning, but sufficient defensive cover is still needed. With just over three weeks left in the transfer window, there is work to do. Guimaraes, presented to the crowd before kick-off, is a top acquisition, but the left flank remains an area for improvement despite Christos Tzolis' promising start.
Next weekend's Community Shield clash with Manchester City in Cardiff will be a strong test of where Arsenal stand, and losing would not be ideal preparation for the league campaign.
