Matt Fitzpatrick has set his sights firmly on a strong challenge at the Masters next month, following his triumphant victory at the Valspar Championship this past Sunday. The Sheffield golfer clinched his first PGA Tour title in three years, marking a significant comeback after a near miss at the Players Championship just a week earlier.
Fitzpatrick's Dramatic Finish at Valspar
Fitzpatrick demonstrated remarkable resilience, bouncing back from the disappointment of a final-hole bogey at the Players Championship. At the Valspar Championship, he birdied the last hole to secure a one-stroke win, showcasing his mental fortitude under pressure. Over the weekend, he shot consistent rounds of 68-68, recording six birdies and an impressive 30 pars.
Key Moment on the 18th Hole
The most crucial shot of the tournament came at the Copperhead Course's challenging 18th hole. Tied with David Lipsky at 10 under par, Fitzpatrick executed a precise approach shot, landing the ball just inside 14 feet. He then sank the putt for his first birdie in 12 attempts on that particular hole. This left Lipsky, playing in the group behind, needing to match the birdie to force a playoff, but his 32-foot attempt fell just short.
Confidence and Preparation for the Masters
Speaking after his victory, the 2022 US Open champion expressed confidence in his current form but acknowledged the unique demands of major tournaments. "I'm obviously very confident in my game right now, but what it takes to win a major is very different to what it takes to win on the PGA Tour," Fitzpatrick stated. "Particularly the Masters, there's extra pressure on the Masters, no matter who you are. It just has that standing above all the other events, as well as the majors."
Fitzpatrick emphasized his commitment to improvement ahead of the Masters, scheduled for early April. "I'm coming away from this week delighted with where my game's at, but there's stuff I want to improve. I want to make sure that when I get to Augusta I'm ready that Thursday morning. I'm really looking forward to that week. Obviously it is still two weeks away, so there is time to prepare and get ready, as well as rest and recover and just be in the best shape as possible."
Other English Contenders at Valspar
Fellow Englishman Jordan Smith also delivered a strong performance, shooting a five-under 66 to finish at nine under par and secure third place. Another compatriot, Marco Penge, was in contention until a bogey on the 16th hole, ultimately finishing in a tie for fourth on eight under after a round of 68.
This victory not only ends Fitzpatrick's three-year drought on the PGA Tour but also positions him as a formidable contender for the upcoming Masters, where he aims to leverage his renewed confidence and refined skills on one of golf's grandest stages.
