Another dramatic night at the 2026 World Cup saw Mohamed Salah inspire Egypt to their first-ever victory in the tournament, while Cape Verde continued their giant-killing run with a stunning draw against Uruguay.
Egypt End Long Wait for World Cup Win
In Group G action in Vancouver, Egypt secured a historic 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand. The All Whites took an early lead through Finn Surman, but Egypt responded after half-time with Mostafa Zico's equalizer. Mohamed Salah then put Egypt ahead with a clinical finish before setting up Trezeguet from a corner to seal the win.
This was Egypt's first World Cup victory in their fourth appearance at the finals, having previously played eight matches without a win. The result puts them on four points, level with Belgium, and in a strong position to reach the last 32.
Cape Verde's Remarkable Run Continues
Cape Verde, buoyed by their shock draw against Spain, produced another memorable result against Uruguay in Miami. Kevin Pina scored Cape Verde's first ever World Cup goal with a free-kick after 21 minutes. Uruguay turned the match around through Maxi Araujo and Agustin Canobbio, but Helio Varela equalized after a defensive error from Mathias Olivera.
A thrilling finish saw Uruguay's Federico Valverde have a close-range effort ruled out for offside, securing a 2-2 draw for Cape Verde. The Blue Sharks now have a real chance to reach the knockout stages ahead of their final group match against Saudi Arabia.
Spain Dominate Saudi Arabia
Spain bounced back emphatically from their opening draw, thrashing Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta. Mikel Oyarzabal scored a quick-fire brace and assisted Lamine Yamal's first World Cup goal, putting Spain 3-0 up inside 24 minutes. An own goal from Hassan Al-Tambakti extended the lead after half-time, while Ferran Torres had a late goal disallowed for offside.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente withdrew both Yamal and Oyarzabal at half-time with the match already won. The result puts Spain top of Group H with four points.
Belgium Held by Iran
Earlier in Los Angeles, Belgium were held to a goalless draw by a spirited Iran side. The result leaves Belgium on four points, level with Egypt in Group G, while Iran's hopes of progression remain alive with two points from two matches.
