Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, stars of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, have reunited for a "great night of conversation" more than two decades after their last film together.
Reunion dinner and social media posts
Monaghan, 49, shared a selfie on Instagram showing the four actors at a dinner table, with Wood and Boyd smiling and Astin posing seriously. The caption read: "Four halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts. ONE great night of conversation. More to come. #BeCurious." He also thanked a couple photobombing in the background.
Astin posted a photo on his own Instagram with the caption "The band's all here." Fans flooded the comments with references to director Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning trilogy.
Franchise legacy and upcoming film
The Lord Of The Rings, based on JRR Tolkien's 1950s novels, follows hobbits on a quest to destroy a ring and prevent Dark Lord Sauron from ruling the world. The first live-action film was released in 2001, concluding with Return Of The King in 2003. Its success spawned numerous spin-offs and TV series.
The franchise is set to return to cinemas next year with The Hunt For Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis. The cast has not yet been announced.
Cast careers since the trilogy
Wood, who played Frodo Baggins, has appeared in films like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Sin City, and Maniac. Astin, known for The Goonies, played Samwise Gamgee and has been in 50 First Dates and Stranger Things. Monaghan, who played Merry Brandybuck, starred in Lost and appeared in X-Men and Star Wars franchises. He frequently collaborates with Boyd, hosting The Friendship Onion podcast and starring in Billy And Dom Eat the World. Boyd, known for Pippin Took and the Chucky franchise, also leads the rock band Beecake.
