Gardeners told to add one key item to soil for juicy tomatoes

Tomato growers are being urged to add a specific item to their soil to ensure a bumper crop of juicy, plump tomatoes this summer. According to gardening enthusiast and TikTok creator Ish, applying tomato feed weekly is essential for the best results.

Weekly Feeding Essential

In a video produced for Cherry Lane Garden Centres, Ish explained that as tomato plants begin to ripen in August, they become "quite thirsty and quite hungry." He advises that gardeners should apply tomato feed to the soil once a week for the remainder of the summer, alongside regular watering.

Tomato feed is rich in vital nutrients like potassium and phosphorus, which help promote larger, more succulent fruit. Ish warned that without this feed, tomato plants may "struggle."

How to Apply

The feed should be mixed at a rate of one capful per four to five litres of water in a watering can. This solution should be applied directly to the compost around the base of the plant, giving it a "good soak" while avoiding contact with the foliage.

Using tomato feed not only boosts fruit size but also encourages the plant to yield a greater quantity of tomatoes. Ish has previously noted that this feed can also be effective on other fruit and vegetable crops.

Watering Tips

Maintaining adequately moist soil is also crucial. Gardeners should avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as alternating between waterlogged and parched conditions can stress the plant, leading to a reduced yield and potentially causing tomatoes to split.
