Tottenham Supporters Launch Campaign Against Roberto De Zerbi
Three prominent Tottenham Hotspur supporters groups have issued strong statements calling on the club to avoid hiring former Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi, should they decide to replace interim manager Igor Tudor. The groups—Women of the Lane, Proud Lilywhites, and Spurs Reach—have united in a coordinated 'No to Roberto De Zerbi' campaign, expressing deep concerns about the potential cultural impact of such an appointment.
Fan Concerns Over Managerial Candidate
The campaign centers on De Zerbi's staunch public defense of his former player Mason Greenwood during their time together at Marseille. Greenwood joined the French club in 2022, two years after being arrested on suspicion of rape, assault, and coercive and controlling behaviour. Although the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges in 2023 due to withdrawn witnesses and new evidence—with Greenwood denying all allegations—De Zerbi's comments have drawn significant criticism.
Supporters groups argue that De Zerbi's attitude, which they describe as 'downplaying the seriousness of violence against women and girls,' raises serious questions about judgement and leadership. Women of the Lane stated in their release: 'Clubs signal their values through the decisions they make. Who they appoint matters. The manager sets the tone, every day, for what is expected, what is tolerated, and how people are treated.'
Cultural Values at Stake
Proud Lilywhites emphasized the manager's role in shaping club culture, noting: 'When someone in that position publicly defends a player like Mason Greenwood, and frames it in a way that downplays the seriousness of what happened, it matters, not just in isolation but in what it signals.' The group added that progress toward inclusivity 'cannot be compromised or treated as secondary,' calling for 'accountability, transparency, and leadership that reflects the values this club claims to stand for.'
Spurs Reach highlighted the broader implications, stating: 'Regardless of intent, framing of this nature risks normalising harmful attitudes, diminishing the experiences of survivors, and sending a deeply concerning message about what is tolerated within the game.'
De Zerbi's Controversial Comments
The controversy stems from comments made by De Zerbi in November 2025, as Greenwood prepared for his first match in England since leaving Manchester United. De Zerbi described Greenwood as a 'good guy' who had paid a 'heavy price' for the domestic abuse allegations, adding: 'He has found the right environment for him. We have lent him a hand and given him affection. It saddens me what happened in his life, because I know a totally different person than the one who was described in England.'
De Zerbi had actively pushed for Marseille to sign Greenwood despite protests from fan groups and opposition from Marseille mayor Benoit Payan, who insisted he did not want the club 'shamed by someone who hits his wife.' After Greenwood scored on his debut, De Zerbi expressed hope that the goal would 'end the controversy' over the signing.
Current Tottenham Situation
The calls come amid a challenging period for Tottenham, with interim manager Igor Tudor having won just one match—a Pyrrhic second-leg victory against Atletico Madrid—since taking over. Tudor recently took leave following the tragic passing of his father, Mario. Speculation is mounting that he could be replaced as Tottenham battles relegation, sitting just one point above the drop zone with tough fixtures against Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Everton remaining.
While De Zerbi is reportedly keen to wait until summer to assess Tottenham's Premier League status, the club may need immediate action to secure their top-flight survival. The supporters groups argue that at a time when Spurs need to rebuild, 'culture matters as much as anything on the pitch,' making De Zerbi's appointment an 'unnecessary cultural risk without a clear, proven track record to justify it.'
