Tottenham Manager Igor Tudor Makes Relegation Admission
Igor Tudor has openly acknowledged that avoiding relegation is the paramount objective for Tottenham Hotspur this season, even as the team prepares for a crucial Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid. The admission comes amid mounting pressure on the manager, with Spurs languishing dangerously close to the Premier League's drop zone.
Perilous League Position and Winless Streak
Tottenham currently occupy 16th place in the Premier League table, a mere point above the relegation threshold. This precarious standing follows a dismal run of 11 consecutive matches without a victory, marking the club's worst such streak since 1975. Notably, Spurs are the only side in the league yet to secure a win in 2026, highlighting the severe challenges facing Tudor since his appointment as Thomas Frank's successor.
The manager's tenure has begun disastrously, with defeats in all three of his games in charge against Arsenal, Fulham, and Crystal Palace. This poor start has already sparked speculation regarding his future at the club. Tottenham's struggles are a stark contrast to last season, where under Ange Postecoglou they finished 17th but secured Champions League qualification by triumphing in the Europa League.
Champions League Distraction Amid Survival Battle
Despite their domestic woes, Tottenham have advanced to the Champions League last 16 after finishing in the top eight of the group phase. They now face a formidable test against Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night. When questioned about the importance of the European fixture, Tudor emphasized the need for focus and growth.
"Of course, it's very important," Tudor stated. "It's important, as I said, always, after the game, we need to be focused on us. We have to grow. So, it can be an opportunity. A totally different mentality can be used in this kind of game. So maybe this can help us to see which problems we have, I believe that these kinds of games can help us to switch in the right way, but always focus on us, to grow as a team, to do things better. And that's the point."
He agreed that the Champions League match could serve as a "free hit" to refine strategies for the Premier League survival fight, adding, "As I said, focus on us, playing a team, who has a story in this Champions League, what they have experienced, they have quality. We need to do our best in terms that we need to grow, as you said also. Because our first aim is the Premier League - this needs to be said publicly, this is a normal thing - this is something extra. But that doesn't mean that we don't want to pass and don’t want to go to the next round."
Critical Upcoming Fixtures and Managerial Uncertainty
The immediate future holds significant challenges for Tottenham, with a Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday, followed by pivotal matches against Nottingham Forest, Sunderland, Brighton, and Wolves. Tudor's contract, which runs only until the end of the season, adds to the uncertainty, with reports suggesting Spurs are considering Roberto De Zerbi as a potential replacement in the summer.
The club faces its first relegation threat since 1977, making the coming weeks decisive for both their Premier League status and Tudor's managerial career. The focus remains squarely on survival, even as European glory beckons in the background.
