Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has openly clarified the reasons behind her expressed frustration after signing a new contract to remain teammates with close friend and fellow player Caitlin Clark. Cunningham officially put pen to paper on a substantial $665,000 deal to stay with the Fever, following a challenging period where an MCL injury sidelined her late in the previous year.
Podcast Comments Spark Misinterpretation
During a candid episode of her personal podcast, 'Show Me Something,' Cunningham made remarks that initially suggested dissatisfaction. "I'm not even gonna lie... it's a little, kind of, frustrating," she stated, leading many fans and observers to speculate that her unhappiness stemmed from financial compensation concerns. However, Cunningham was quick to address these assumptions directly on social media platform X, aiming to set the record straight and dispel any misconceptions.
Setting the Record Straight on Social Media
"I'm gonna shut this down right now," Cunningham posted emphatically to her X account. She elaborated that her frustration was not related to the monetary value of the contract. "I'm not mad about the money.... I just wanted more years because I love it here. I wanted to get a house so I could bring my dog and donkey to Indy with me. That's it. That's the truth. I think we have something very special here in Indiana!!"
This clarification highlights Cunningham's primary desire for stability and a longer-term commitment, rather than any issue with the financial terms offered by the Fever organization.
Further Explanation to Reporters
On Tuesday morning, following a team practice session, Cunningham further elaborated on her comments to gathered reporters. "Twitter kind of blew up last night about a comment I made on my podcast, but... that's not what I meant at all. And I think if you listen to the full clip, you really understand that I just wanted to be somewhere for more than one year," she explained.
Cunningham, who is approaching 30 years of age, expressed a strong personal longing for permanence and establishment in her professional life. "I'm almost 30 years old. I wanna have a home. I wanna kind of get established and I would love to get established in a place like Indiana. We had such a great time."
Emphasis on Team Camaraderie and Love for Basketball
She passionately described the positive environment within the Fever squad, which has reignited her passion for the sport. "And you know, when you find a group of girls who really make you fall in love with basketball again and you enjoy it, you enjoy them, not only on the court but off the court, like you want to hold on to that. And so that's what I meant by that."
Cunningham noted that her teammates fully understood her intentions, contrasting with the online narrative. "I think all of them this morning, they're like, we know exactly what you meant. The internet's doing what the internet does and trying to stir things up, but it made me sound snotty and ungrateful, and that is the last thing I ever want. I am so grateful."
Addressing her recent injury history, she added, "I know I'm coming off a pretty big knee injury, and so it was never about the money, it was just about the years because I wanted to be with them. And God forbid, a girl loves her teammates, you know what I mean?"
Background and Recovery from Injury
Cunningham's journey to the Fever began with a trade from the Phoenix Mercury before the 2025 season, marking a significant move after spending her entire professional career with Phoenix. In her debut season with Indiana, she appeared in 30 games, starting 13 of them, and posted averages of 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and one steal per game.
Unfortunately, her season was cut short by the MCL injury, which required recovery time. However, Cunningham has since made a full recovery and is anticipated to be available for the team's opening game of the upcoming season against the Dallas Wings on May 9, signaling a positive return to competitive action.
