Manchester United are poised for a pivotal weekend of discussions as they move closer to appointing an interim manager until the season's end. Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the former United boss, is scheduled for direct talks at the club's Carrington training base on Saturday.
Weekend Showdown for Interim Role
The Norwegian legend is not the only candidate in contention. He is reportedly vying for the position with Michael Carrick, who served under him as a coach. Carrick is understood to have already been interviewed by the club's hierarchy on Thursday.
Key decision-makers Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox will lead the conversations with Solskjær. Their presence at Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Burnley was notable, where they observed current caretaker manager Darren Fletcher in action.
Fletcher's Case and Sesko's Impact
While Solskjær and Carrick are considered frontrunners, Darren Fletcher cannot be entirely discounted. The Scot, who is the club's Under-18s coach, took temporary charge for the midweek trip to Turf Moor and will also lead the team in Sunday's FA Cup tie against Brighton.
It is believed Fletcher impressed Berrada and Wilcox with his half-time team talk when United were trailing 1-0. His intervention preceded a second-half turnaround, spearheaded by two impressive goals from Benjamin Sesko, before a late Jaidon Anthony equaliser for the hosts.
When questioned about his future on Friday, Fletcher remained focused on the immediate task. "I've been focusing on the job at hand," he stated. "There's been no thoughts or conversations about my future."
History and Potential Reunion
Solskjær's previous interim stint at Old Trafford, from December 2018 to March 2019, was a resounding success, ultimately earning him the permanent role. During his full tenure, he secured consecutive top-four finishes, including a second-place spot, and guided the team to the 2021 Europa League final, which was lost on penalties to Villarreal.
Carrick was an integral part of his coaching staff during that period and briefly took the reins for three games following Solskjær's dismissal in November 2021, winning two and drawing one. If Solskjær gets the nod, Carrick is said to be open to working as his number two once more. The dynamic would be less clear if the roles were reversed.
