Man United's Interim Manager Race: Solskjaer and Carrick Lead Two-Horse Contest
Solskjaer and Carrick Battle for Man United Interim Role

Manchester United's hunt for an interim manager until the end of the season has narrowed to a direct contest between two club legends, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick. The decision follows the sacking of Ruben Amorim on Monday.

Face-to-Face Talks Held at Carrington

According to reports, both Solskjaer and Carrick held discussions with chief executive Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox on Tuesday. However, the club is not expected to make a final appointment until they have met the candidates in person.

In a notable development, Sir Alex Ferguson was present at the Carrington training ground on Tuesday, meeting with Berrada and Wilcox. All four men in contention for the role played under the iconic former manager.

Fletcher in Temporary Charge for Burnley Clash

Darren Fletcher will take the reins for Wednesday night's Premier League fixture away at Burnley. The 41-year-old Scot admitted that managing United is "beyond his wildest dreams" but confirmed any talks about his long-term future will wait until after the match.

Fletcher revealed he sought and received Sir Alex Ferguson's "blessing" before accepting the temporary role. He also attempted to contact the departed Amorim but has been unsuccessful so far.

He will be assisted by under-21 coaches Travis Binnion and Alan Wright, alongside Jonny Evans, who has returned to the club.

The Leading Contenders for the Interim Role

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, 52, has emerged as a serious candidate following an emotional return to Old Trafford. The Norwegian, out of work since leaving Besiktas in August, previously took over as caretaker following Jose Mourinho's sacking in December 2018, a stint that led to a near three-year permanent tenure.

Michael Carrick, 44, is also a strong contender. The former midfielder performed the caretaker role for three matches when Solskjaer was dismissed in November 2021. He is available after being sacked by Middlesbrough in June.

While Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was caretaker for four games in October 2024, is out of the running, Fletcher remains a remote possibility depending on his performance against Burnley.

Fletcher Focused on Immediate Task

Ahead of the trip to Turf Moor, Fletcher kept his cards close to his chest regarding team selection and tactics, refusing to reveal if he would abandon Amorim's much-criticised back-three system.

"I've had a conversation and the focus was on this game," Fletcher stated. "I have a match to prepare for, a training session to organise... We will talk after the match." He confirmed Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, and possibly Kobbie Mainoo are available after injury.

The club's hierarchy are now weighing up a sentimental return for Solskjaer against appointing Carrick, with a decision expected imminently after the Burnley fixture.
