Manchester United's hunt for a new permanent manager has suffered a significant setback after Simone Inzaghi firmly rejected an approach from the Premier League giants.
Inzaghi's Firm Rejection
According to reports from Italy, the Al-Hilal boss was contacted by United regarding the possibility of taking over at Old Trafford in the summer. However, the 49-year-old Italian immediately declined the opportunity, stating his current focus remains entirely on his role in Saudi Arabia.
Inzaghi emerged as a potential candidate following the sudden dismissal of Ruben Amorim on Monday. The club is now expected to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as an interim boss until the end of the season while they conduct a full-scale search for Amorim's long-term successor.
Lucrative Contract and Title Race Focus
A key factor behind Inzaghi's decision is believed to be his substantial contract with Al-Hilal. He signed a two-year deal worth £43.3 million upon leaving Inter Milan last June, and still has 18 months remaining on that agreement.
Furthermore, the former Inter manager is deeply engrossed in a gripping Saudi Pro League title race. His Al-Hilal side currently sits top of the table, just one point ahead of rivals Al-Nassr. The team is on a remarkable run of 17 consecutive victories across all competitions, a streak dating back to mid-September.
"His commitment to Al-Hilal is absolute at this critical juncture," a source indicated. The club faces a decisive top-of-the-table clash against Al-Nassr next Monday, a match that could prove pivotal in the championship battle.
United's Interim Setup and Managerial Shortlist
With Inzaghi now out of the running, United's search continues. He was among a shortlist of candidates that also reportedly included Oliver Glasner, Roberto De Zerbi, and Enzo Maresca.
In the immediate term, the club will be led by former midfielder Darren Fletcher, who will act as caretaker manager for Wednesday's Premier League fixture against Burnley. He will be assisted by Jonny Evans.
Fletcher described the opportunity as a "surreal" and "amazing honour," though admitted the circumstances of Amorim's exit made the situation difficult. He and Evans are also set to lead the team in Sunday's FA Cup tie against Brighton before a separate interim manager is appointed for the remainder of the campaign.
Inzaghi's pedigree is undeniable; he guided Inter Milan to the Champions League final last season, recording 141 wins from 217 matches in charge. For now, however, his ambitions lie firmly in Saudi Arabia, leaving Manchester United to look elsewhere in their quest for stability and success.
