England's World Cup semi-final exit against Argentina has ignited a fierce debate among pundits over whether head coach Thomas Tuchel should be sacked. The Three Lions led 1-0 with five minutes of regulation time remaining, only for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez to equalise from range. In the third minute of added time, Lionel Messi's cross was headed home by Lautaro Martinez, sealing a 2-1 victory for the defending champions and sending England crashing out.
Fans and pundits vent fury after late collapse
The manner of the defeat, with England defending deep after taking the lead, provoked widespread anger on social media. Several high-profile pundits voiced their disappointment across TV and radio, with many laying the blame squarely at Tuchel's door.
On talkSPORT, Jamie O'Hara claimed the head coach had “cost us the World Cup”. “I can't believe it, it's a disgrace. He should be sacked, get him out, gone!” he fumed. Troy Deeney echoed the sentiment on CBS: “For someone at the FA, whoever makes the decision, if that guy thinks this is the best, we [aren’t] going to win, so either sack him or leave your job.”
Tuchel's defensive substitutions criticised
Tuchel introduced defenders Dan Burn, Ezri Konsa and Nico O'Reilly to see out the game at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia. Chris Sutton, speaking on BBC Five Live, described it as “a coaching catastrophe”. “The fact that England get themselves in front and then basically hand Argentina the initiative, defending deep, another defender on,” Sutton said. “It’s quite a simple game, football, you have to get up the pitch. You can’t expect to defend for 30 minutes against the quality Argentina have and keep giving the ball back to them, that’s what England did and it’s all on the coach as far as I’m concerned. He made the changes, he was negative. So the question which I’m going to ask is, how can you trust Tuchel to take this England team forward?”
Jason Cundy, also on talkSPORT, branded the German's tactics as “cowardly”. “Same England, different manager, I'm afraid. Wow, I mean talk about not just throwing it away, but hand the initiative and then throw it away. To go out the way that we did again, it's cowardly.”
Tim Vickery baffled by England's decisions
BBC pundit Tim Vickery said: “I can’t believe that Spain will self-destruct in the way that England self-destructed. I am absolutely baffled by the decisions that the coach has taken here. Argentina were let back into the game by the England team choosing all the wrong decisions and this has to be on the coach.”
Some pundits urge patience and stability
Not all voices called for Tuchel's dismissal. Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira, speaking on 'The Rest is Football' show, said: “You would be mad to sack him or to change the coach. I believe in stability. I think that was his first big tournament and of course there are some positives and negatives and the frustration is going to be there because you are out like that. But how can he build from that?”
On BBC Breakfast, former Manchester City and Sunderland manager Peter Reid argued the FA “had” to stick by their man. “I am disappointed at the result and the better team won, but we’ve got to a semi-final. You’ve got to stick with him, you can’t keep changing managers,” he said.
